We generally do not pay enough attention to our foot health. However, this lack of attention to foot health is the root cause of many diseases related to the spine. It would not be wrong to say that women in particular fail in choosing shoes and consequently in foot health. As there is not a woman who does not like to wear heels, it seems that there is also not a single woman who is not uncomfortable after wearing these.
So, what are the main causes of these discomforts? These shoes both threaten women’s foot health but cannot be given up because of aesthetic factors. Which one of them are our friends and which ones are our enemies? Foot and Ankle Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. Selim Muğrabi answers this important question.
Selim Muğrabi says that when the types of shoes that threaten women’s health, which women cannot give up, are examined, a serious result emerges: “Especially in the summer, the flat shoes that women do not take off their feet and claim to be very comfortable do not mean that they are healthy just because they are comfortable, on the contrary, they are actually unhealthy because their soles are flat and they do not provide any internal support. As the foot loses muscle strength over time as it stands, it loses its arched structure inside the shoe after a while and starts to sink into the shoe.”
Commenting on the anatomical structure of the foot, Dr. Muğrabi says, “All of our feet look normal when we get up in the morning, but if I am not wearing good shoes, when I return home in the evening, my feet look like flatfoot. Because when the muscle that supports my foot arch gets tired, this arch collapses. If the shoes are good, if there is a support inside, then there is no problem because the arch will not collapse thanks to this muscle support. As soon as the arch collapses, the pain starts.” he says.
Underlining that flat shoes cause back and knee pain, Muğrabi says that flip-flops are also harmful, “It is no different with the flip-flops, one of the indispensable items of summers. Flip-flops cause the same problem as flat shoes. In fact, they cause even more problems. With flat shoes, at least the front of the foot is covered. If a person is flat-footed, when they wear flip-flops, they develop knee pain much faster because their heels pronate outward. Because the walking axis is disrupted.” he says.
WOMEN’S ARCHENEMY SHOES STILETTOS
Selim Muğrabi states that women’s feet are under great threat when it comes to heels: “The limit and height are the important factors in high heels, very high heels are of course harmful,” he says and adds, “Especially the thin heel is the worst enemy of women. As the heel height increases, the load on the knee and lower back increases, causing knee and lower back pain. As the load shifts to the front, a bunion forms on the big toe and the toes become deformed.” he concludes.
Stating that the shoes that doctors prefer more are the wedge heels, Dr. Selim Muğrabi states, “Wedge heels are the kind of shoes that we doctors prefer more. If the front and back parts of the shoe move together, then I have no problem. So, if the shoe has a high back and a high front, then it’s fine. But of course, excess of anything is a problem.
There is no problem when the heel height is up to 12 – 15 punts. But after 15 punts, the foot rises too high, and as it rises from too much, knee and lower back pain occur again because the springing is disrupted. Because the higher the shoe rises, the harder its material becomes. And when the material becomes harder, the problem automatically increases.”
Explaining other types of shoes, Muğrabi summarizes the situation one by one as follows; “Wooden heels are among the shoes that women should stay away from. Because we need flexibility in our shoes. Wooden or clog shoes cause pain problems because they do not stretch. Pointed toe shoes are very lately. But this shoe disrupts women’s foot health. The pointed structure of this shoe squeezes the toe. Bunion is a big problem in women and these shoes can lead to it. Pointed toe shoes trigger bunion and cause deformation of the little toes. Here’s a description of the ideal shoe: round and wide in front, laced, if possible, with a heel height between 5 and 10 punts.”
